DOWNERS GROVE: Nine teams enter
the 2005 Chicago ASA Men's Class D Metro championship tournament
and SoftballSeason.com (4-1) left with the top prize of a berth
to play at to 2005 ASA Men's Class D Eastern national Tournament
to be held in Salem, Virginia over Labor Day Weekend. The champions
also pocketed two hundred and fifty dollars for expenses with their
efforts in this tournament. Billy Martin Softball/Hennessey (3-2)
from Crystal Lake finished in second place, J Denny Masonry (4-2)
from Kankakee was third with Caps/Fury (2-2) from Lombard taking
home fourth place from this tournament.
SoftballSeason.com opened tournament play with a first round contest
against Rounding Third from Elk Grove and posted an 11-4 as Andy
Smith, Dave Sobieski, and Del Hollingsworth had three hits apiece,
and Dave Sobieski drove in 4 runs in this victory to advance.
In the second round SoftballSeason.com met and defeated J Denny
masonry 13-10 to move into the winner's bracket championship game
as Torry Caniglia, Dave Smith, and Jason Amptmann all had three
hits. Shortstop Matt Liaromatis made a game saving play on the final
play of the game. J. Denny Masonry made it to this semifinal game
of the winner's bracket by opening with a pigtail or play in game
against Chasing Eleven and beating the, 11-4 to advance into the
first round where they met and defeated Buzz in a close game 18-17
to move into the semifinals and the match up with SoftballSeason.com.
In the game between the tournaments last two remaining unbeaten
teams it was SoftballSeason.com verses Billy Martin/Hennessey with
SoftballSeason.com edging out the Crystal Lake ball club by a final
score of 8-7 to win the winner's bracket behind the hitting of Caniglia
and D. Smith led the way with three hits each.
SoftballSeason.com now had to sit and wait as the loser's bracket
needed to be played out to its conclusion before they would know
which of the remaining teams would win the loser's bracket to earn
the right to play them in the finals. After the loser's bracket
was concluded it was a rematch with Billy Martin/Hennessey that
awaited SoftballSeason.com in the championship game. Billy Martin/
Hennessey won this game 10-4 to force the need to have the 'if necessary
gem' played between these two teams in order to determine which
of them would be the 2005 Chicago ASA Metro Class D Champions.
In the deciding game, SoftballSeason.com was losing 5-2 in the bottom
of the fifth inning when they exploded for ten runs in the 5th to
take a 12-5 lead. Dave Sobieski, Brian Smith, and Del Hollingsworth
each drove in two runs in the pivotal ten run fifth inning. However
Billy Martin refused to quit, scoring five runs in the sixth inning
before adding one more in the seventh inning to narrow the lead
to 12-11. Billy Martin/Hennessey had the tying run on third base
when SoftballSeason.com managed to finally collect the third out
to end the game with a one run victory.
For the 2005 ASA Men's Class D Chicago Metro Tournament the SoftballSeason.com
ball club was led by the hitting of Torry Caniglia was .667, Dave
Smith .611, and Del Hollingsworth. 643. Team Co-captain Jeff Sheehan
said, "Defense and timely hitting were the keys to our winning
the 2005 ASA Men's Class D Chicago Metro Tournament."
Billy Martin/Hennessey made it to the championship game by opening
the tournament with a first round contest against with Pla-Ball
who failed to show up at game time so the Crystal Lake ball club
received a 7-0 forfeit win to advance into the second round of play.
In that second round contest Billy Martin/Hennessey locked horns
with Caps/Fury and in a close high scoring affair emerged as the
victory by the final score of 17-15 to move into the winner's bracket
championship game against SoftballSeason.com. Caps/Fury made it
to this semifinal game by opening tournament play with a narrow
6-4 win over Joltin' Joes from Hainesville in the first round of
tournament play.
Billy Martin/Hennessey dropped the game between the tournaments
last two remaining unbeaten teams to SoftballSeason.com by the final
count of 8-7 sending them into the loser's bracket where they would
met J Denny Masonry in the loser's bracket championship game.
Billy Martin/Hennessey stopped J. Denny Masonry 12-9 to earn the
right to play SoftballSeason.com for the 2005 Chicago Metro Class
D championship.
In the championship game Billy Martin/Hennessey evened the series
at one win and one loss each after stopping SoftballSeason.com 10-4
to force the need to have the 'if necessary game' played between
these two ball clubs.
The tournament's championship game went right down to the wire as
the tying run died at third base in a 12-11 loss to SoftballSeason.com
as Billy Martin/Hennessy had to accept second place from this tournament.
Billy Martin/Hennessey did not supply Illinois Softball Report with
any team information, stats, highlights, or quote son how they were
able to finish in second place at this tournament.
