Ten Teams Participate At Byron Sports Complex On May 27th

BYRON: Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's (5-1) from Rockford bounced back in the 'if necessary game' to defeat Northwest Pallet / Starbusters (5-2) from Woodstock 11-4 to win the ten teams, USSSA Men's Class D/E Great Lakes National Tournament Qualifier played at the Byron Sports Complex in Byron on May 27th. Third place went to Dairy Queen Grill & Chill (3-2) from Rockford with Morning Wood Softball (2-2) from Woodstock finishing in fourth place at this tournament.
Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's opened play with a play in or pig tail game against Costa's Precision Home Insurance, Michael from Byron and acme away with a 12-4 to advance into the regular bracket. In their second contest of this tournament it was Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's over Tidal Wave from Elgin by a final score of 17-2. Now playing in the semifinal of the winner's bracket Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's and Northwest Pallet / Starbusters tangled for what was to be the first of three meetings on this Saturday with Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's winning 16-10 to advance into the winner's bracket championship game of this tournament. Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's now played Dairy Queen Chill & Grill in the undefeated game of the winner's bracket with Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's winning big 10-0 to become the only unbeaten team left in this tournament and assuring them of a spot the tournaments championship game against whichever team that wins the loser's bracket to qualify as their challenger in the title game.
That team turned out to be Northwest Pallet / Starbusters with Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's playing a rematch of their second game in the title contest. Unlike their second game in this tournament, Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's lost to Northwest Pallet / Starbusters 17-0. With this loss by Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's the need to play the 'if necessary game' became the deciding factor in this tournament. In that extra game with the tournament title and national berth on the line and going to the winner Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's found a way to bounce back and win 11-4 to claim the title to this tournament over Northwest Pallet / Starbusters.
Northwest Pallet / Starbusters made it to the championship game by winning their opener over Splitters 12-3 before dropping their second game to Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's 16-10.
Now playing from the loser's bracket where a single loss means elimination from this tournament Northwest Pallet / Starbusters went to work as they sent Costa's / Precision Home Insurance, Michael 12-9 to advance in the bracket. Next up for the Woodstock based ball club was a game with Morning Wood Softball and in a close game Northwest Pallet / Starbusters proved to be one run better on this Saturday afternoon winning 8-7 to advance into the loser's bracket championship game.
With revenge on their mind and blood in their eyes Northwest Pallet / Starbusters took the field to play the team that had put them into the loser's bracket earlier in the day Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's. Northwest Pallet / Starbusters came out swinging and piled the runs up winning by the run rule 17-0 to force the need to have the 'if necessary game' played between these two ball clubs in order to determine which of them would leave town with the title to this tournament safely tucked away. In the at extra game Northwest Pallet / Starbusters came up on the short end of an 11-4 final score to finish in second place behind Rigid Construction / Little Anthony's at this tournament.
