2006 Illinois ASA Men's Class
B State Champions - Reid Builders
ALTON: Reid Builders from Murphysboro
won the 2006 ASA Men's Class B State Tournament held at the Gordon
Moore Complex in Alton on August 19th & 20th with a perfect
5-0 record over a field of nineteen teams. Joe's Pizza (4-2) from
Shelbyville took home second place, Precision Recovery (4-2) from
Mt. Zion finished in third place and Jacobs Exteriors (5-2) from
Fairview Heights took home fourth place. Rounding out the top eight
finishers were Quinn (3-2) from Abingdon and Mudcats (2-2) from
Quincy finishing in a tie for fifth place with both Dragon's Dome
(2-2) from Pekin and Can Do Metals (2-2) from St Anne finishing
in a tie for seventh place at this years state tournament.
Reid Builders were led to the title by the play of their pitcher
Ron Ohney who was named as the 'Most Valuable Player' of the 2006
Illinois ASA Men's Class B State Tournament. Ohney was joined on
the 2006 ASA Men's Class B All-State Tournament team by his Reid
Builders teammates Jeremy Kranweatter, Eric Thies and Kevin Breckenridge.
Reid Builders opened play on Saturday with a first round game against
Economy Boat from Wood River and posted a 15-13 win onto the bracket
board to advance in the bracket. In their second game on Saturday
it was Reid Builders and Argosy Alton locking up with one another
and in this game the Reid Builders ball club used their team defense
to shut down their opponent as they won for the second straight
time edging the Argosy ball club 5-3 to advance into the semifinal
of the winner's bracket. Argosy had defeated the Web Gems from Springfield
in the first round of play 23-19 to advance into this second round
contest with Reid Builders.
Playing in their semifinal contest of the winner's bracket Reid
Builders and Precision Recovery went toe to toe with each other
but this game featured a combination of the smoking hot bats of
Reid Builders and a smothering defense from Reid Builders as they
won easily over Precision Recovery 23-5 to advance into the winner's
bracket championship game of the 2006 Illinois ASA Men's Class B
State tournament. Precision Recovery made it to this semifinal game
of the winner's bracket by opening play with a first round 15-12
win over Throop / Sammy's from Springfield before taking on and
defeating Can Do Metals 19-7 in the second round of tournament action.
Now only two teams remained undefeated and it was time for them
to play head to head with Reid Builders and Joe's Pizza playing
for the title to the winner's bracket at stake for the winning team.
In a close game that featured strong defense from both sides of
the field Reid Builders managed to upend Joe's Pizza 13-10 to win
the winner's bracket and assure them of a spot in the 2006 Illinois
ASA Men's Class B State championship game.
Now Reid Builders needed to sit and watch as the loser's bracket
needed to be played out to its conclusion before knowing which of
the remaining teams would earn the right to be their opponent in
the state championship game. When the dust settled back down on
the infield after the last out had been recorded it was Joe's Pizza's
ball club as the team still standing and a rematch of the winner's
bracket undefeated game was on tap in the title game.
The Reid Builders ball club was a team on a mission and they were
all business in the 2006 Illinois ASA Men's Class B State Championship
game winning 20-7 to complete their undefeated run to the state
title.
Joe's Pizza the defending 2005 Illinois ASA Men's Class B State
Champions made it to the 2006 Illinois ASA Men's Class B State Championship
game by opening play with a first round win over Little Four from
East Alton by a final score of 15-3 to advance into the second round
of play in the winner's bracket. Little Four had won a play in game
over the Mustangs from Collinsville 12-11 to advance into the regular
bracket and the match up with Joe's Pizza in the first round of
play.
In the second round it was Joe's Pizza and the Dragon's Dome squad
playing head to head with Joe's Pizza winning a close one run ball
game 13-12 to advance into the semifinal of the winner's bracket.
The Dragon's Dome ball club had beaten 6-4-3 from Alton 30-12 in
the first round play to earn the right to play Joe's Pizza in the
second round of tournament action.
