ISA Open Tavern State
Seven Teams Participant At Route
130 Sports complex In Urbana On 7/9 & 10

URBANA: The Liquor Store went a perfect 4-0
to win the seven team 2005 ISA Men's Open Tavern State Tournament
held at the Route 130 Complex in Urbana on July 9th. The champions
were led by the play of their shortstop Valachai Turyuck who was
named as the most Valuable Player at this tournament. He was joined
on the 2005 ISA Men's Open All-Tavern State Tournament Team by his
teammates Corey Trone, Chad Tucker, Brian Olson, Chris Dewitt, and
Alex Brungarld. Lakota (4-2) came in second place and they were
led by the defensive play of Eric Beard who was named as the tournament's
'Gold Glove fielder'. Joining Beard on the 2005 ISA Men's Open Tavern
All-State Tournament team were his teammates Jeff Freden, Jared
Beedy, Scott Whitt, and Roger Whitt. Third place went to Balls Deep
(1-2) and they placed three players on the All-State tournament
team, they were; Matt Steinkoenig, Cory Mcleod, and Kenny Brown.
Fourth place was taken by Gimme Dat (2-2) who placed two of its
players on the 2005 ISA Men's Open All-State Tavern Tournament Team.
They were; Damen Marlett and Bob Rourke.
The Liquor Store opened tournament action with a first round game
against TJ3/Tracks/Miken and promptly posted a 15-5 win up onto
the bracket board to advance into the second round of play.
The Liquor Store ball club now squared off with Lakota and hung
an 'L' onto them by the final score of 16-11. This win moved the
Liquor Store into the tournaments undefeated game where they met
Balls Deep/Pub II. The Liquor Store won this contest by the finals
score of 15-9 to move into the championship game of the tournament
against whichever team that would emerge from the loser's bracket
to challenge them in the finals. Balls Deep/Pub II made it to the
winner's bracket finals by opening with a first round bye before
taking on and defeating Gimme Dat 14-5 in the second round of tournament
play.
The tournament's championship game was rematch of the second round
game as the Liquor Store and Lakota squared off with one another
for the second time on this Saturday. In an action packed ball game
it was the Liquor Store holding off Lakota by a final score of 19-17
to win the 2005 ISA Men's Open Tavern State Tournament with a perfect
4-0 record.
The Liquor Store did not provide Illinois Softball Report with any
details, stats, highlights or quotes on how they were able to win
this 2005 ISA Men's Open Tavern State Tournament.
Tournament runner-up Lakota opened tournament play with a first
round win over Slick Rick's from Bloomington 13-3 to advance into
the second round of play.
In the second round of Tournamtn action the Lakota ball club tasted
defeat as they were beaten by the Liquor Store 16-11 to send them
into the loser's bracket where they needed to battle back to get
into the finals.
And battle back they did starting with a 19-2 victory over Re Max
to start the climb back to the finals. Next it was Lakota sending
home Gimme Dat 14-4 as they were gaining momentum as they games
went by.
Balls Deep/Pub II was excused next by a final score of 18-3 to give
Lakota a chance at getting a little revenge over the team that had
put them into the loser's bracket earlier in the day. Lakota gamely
tried to keep it rolling but the Liquor Store also had ideas of
winning as they held on to defeat Lakota 19-17 to send Lakota home
with second place from this tournament.
