SUGAR GROVE: Darkness caused
the cancellation of the 'if necessary game' of the Men's Class
D ISA State Qualifier played at the Sugar Grove Softball Complex
in Sugar Grove on April 2nd, 2005. The two remaining teams each
earned a paid state berth for their efforts in this early season
tournament. The Hitmen (3-1) from East Peoria had won the winners
bracket before being stopped by Lynch Mob (6-1) from Naperville
25-18 in the first championship game. The Lynch Mob did things
the hard way losing their opener to Pla Ball from Northbrook 5-4
before regrouping to run off six straight wins to reach the 'if
necessary game'. Aero Communications (2-2) from Sandwich finished
in third place and took home a paid state berth with Pla Ball
(3-2) finishing in fourth place.
The Hitmen started their march to the title game by disposing
of Lethal Softball (0-2) from Lockport 11-8 in their first game
of this tournament.
The Hitmen hit their stride in the next game as they pounded out
a 17-7 win over Primetime from Shorewood to advance into the game
between the last two unbeaten team left in this tournament.
In the battle of the last two unbeaten teams the East Peoria ball
club posted a hard fought 18-15 win over Aero Communications to
earn their spot in the tournament's championship game.
Now the Hitmen needed to sit back and watch as the loser's bracket
unfolded before their eyes and when the final out of the loser's
bracket was recorded a match-up with Lynch Mob awaited the East
Peoria ball club in the championship contest.
The Lynch Mob came into the first championship game as a team
that was on a roll and they continued that roll by posting an
impressive 25-18 win onto the bracket board.
With the sun saying goodbye and no lights available at the Sugar
Grove Softball Complex both teams agreed to split the title.
The Lynch Mob did things the hardest way possible by losing a
one run ball game to open the tournament as they were sent into
the loser's bracket by Pla Ball after the finals score of 5-4
was posted onto the bracket.
The Lynch Mob regrouped after this tough one run loss and went
to work with both their bats and their gloves starting with a
game against Shala Farms from Yorkville as they hung a W on the
board by a final score of 13-2.
The Lynch Mob improved to two wins against one loss after hanging
an impressive 18-4 win in five innings over the Chicago Mustangs
from Oak Lawn.
Next the Lynch Mob eliminated Primetime (1-2) from Shorewood 6-1
to send them home in fifth place.
Revenge is always sweet. As the Lynch Mop tasted the sweet fruits
of eliminating the team that had put them into the loser's bracket
earlier in the day by defeating Pla Ball 12-9 to advance into
the loser's bracket championship game,
The Lynch Mob squared off with Aero Communication with the right
to oppose the Hitmen in the championship game riding on the outcome
of this contest. The Naperville based ball club hung tough and
pulled out a 12-10 win to advance into the championship game.
Lynch Mob still needed two wins as the took the field against
the Hitmen from East Peoria and they went about doing just that
posting a high scoring win on to the bracket board 25-18 to force
the need of playing the 'if necessary game' between these two
ball club to decide who the tournament champion would be.
Both teams wanting to play but daylight fading away they came
to the only reasonable conclusion. Split the championship in this
tournament but look forward to playing each other again sometime
down the road.
