Head First Wins USSSA Mixed D

Rockford: Head First from Crete won the 'if necessary game' over Flemings Tap from De Kalb to win the ten team USSSA Northwest Mixed D Nationals played at the Sportscore Complex in Rockford on October 6 & 7 with a 4-1 overall record.
Head First who was led by the play of Megan Berryman (Female MVP) and Brian Tully (Male MVP) opened play with a 5-3 win over Rockford's Blackhawk Athletic Club.
In their second game they came out smoking as the drilled Cuervo Gold 2000 from Deerfield 13-3.
Head First won the winners bracket with a close 6-5 win over Flemings Tap.
Flemings Tap made it back to the championship game and handed the Crete ball club a 14-8 loss to even the tournament at one loss each. The extra game was all Head First as they jumped out to a big lead and never looked back on their way to a 14-1 victory to cinch the tournament title.
Head First placed eight people on the All-Tournament team; Maureen Walz, Tracy Drechsel, Carrie Downs, John Waters, Mark Hammer, Brad Opiola plus the Male & Female MVP's, Brian Tully & Megan Berryman.
Fleming Tap who was led by the play of Sue Stein (Female Outstanding Defensive Player) and Jim Watson (Male Outstanding Defensive layer) opened play with a 16-1 pounding of Coors Light.
Their second game was a wild high scoring affair with the De Kalb squad coming out on top over Northland Tool 23-16.
Fleming Tap lost a heartbreaker in the winners bracket final to Head First by a single run 6-5.
Fleming Tap regrouped and scored another exciting win in a high scoring game over Northland Tool, 23-19.
The first championship game went to Fleming Tap 14-8 over Head First but the De Kalb ball club just could not find another game in them as they fell in the 'if necessary game' to Head First 14-1.
Fleming Tap placed six people on the All-Tournament team: Eric Murphy, Derek Metcalf, Lynn Sinoki, Jill Popovich and the male & female Outstanding Defensive Players, Jim Watson and Jill Stein.
