Twelve Teams Participate At Annual
Byron Fest Tournament In Byron
BYRON: Double D's from Godley
won the 2006 USSSA Women's Class D Division of the annual Byron
Fest Softball Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record. The champions
earned a berth to play at the 2006 USSSA Women's Class D Great Lakes
national Tournament to be held over Labor Day Weekend in Rockford.
Culver's Softball (3-2) from Freeport finished in second place with
Asche's Tap / PM Pub (3-2) from Milwaukee taking home third place
and 3WD (2-2) from Addison finishing in fourth place at this twelve
team event.
Double D's opened play with a first round contest on Saturday morning
against Poplar Grove Airmotive from Loves Park and promptly posted
a 15-3 win up onto the bracket board to advance into the second
round of action. Double D's than played against Best Realty from
Rockford and they hung their second straight W onto the bracket
board by the final score of 10-6 Best Realty had received a first
round bye in order to advance into this game against Double D's.
Double D's finished tournament play on Saturday as one of only two
unbeaten teams left in this tournament after they stopped Asche's
Tap / PM Pub 12-2 in a semifinal game of the winner's bracket. Asche's
Tap / PM Pub opened play with a first round bye before stopping
AFI from Streator 15-9 in the second round to advance into the semifinal
sand the game with double D's.
On Sunday Double D's continued their winning ways as they met and
defeated Culvers Softball 17-7 to win the winner's bracket assuring
themselves of a spot in the tournament's championship game against
whichever team that would come out of the loser's bracket to challenge
them in the finals.
Double D's need to sit back and wait as the loser's bracket need
to be played out to its conclusion before they would know which
of the remaining teams would be their challenger in the title game.
When the dust from the loser's bracket cleared a rematch with Culvers
Softball was in store for the ladies from Streator in the championship
game.
Once again Double D's was ready for the task before them as they
won a closer game this time but won just the same defeating Culvers
Softball 9-5 in the championship game to complete their undefeated
run to the title of the2006 Byron Fest Women's Class D USSSA Great
Lakes National Tournament Qualifying event.
Culver made it to the title by opening play with a fir t round bye
before defeating Bad influence from Dixon 14-9 in the second round.
Bad Influence had defeated Neighbors bar & Grill 11-4 in the
first round of Tournament action to advance into this second round
contest with Culver's Softball.
Culver's Softball than defeated 3WD 13-5 in their semifinal contest
on Saturday afternoon to become one of only two teams left undefeated
in this tournament. 3WD made it to this semifinal match-up with
Culver Softball by receiving a first round bye before stopping Neighbors
Bar & Grill II in the second round 17-7 to advance into their
game with 3WD.
On Sunday Culver's Softball started out on the wrong foot as they
were beaten by Double D's 17-7 to drop them into the loser's bracket
finals where they met and defeated Ashe's Tap / PM Pub 13-9. This
win earned them a second shot at the Double D's ladies but that
proved to be not fruitful as the ladies from Godley complete their
unbeaten run to the title by stopping Culver's Softball 9-5 in the
title game to send Culver's Softball home with second place.
