Cuervo Gold Wins USSSA/Worth Women's Class C N.I.T.

Nine Teams Participate At Forest Hills Diamonds In Rockford On Aug. 14 &15

Rockford: In the 22nd Annual USSSA/Worth Sports Women's Class C National Invitational Tournament held Forest Hills Diamonds in Rockford Cuervo Gold (4-0) from Deerfield was down 8-3 to Blackhawk Athletic Club (4-2) from Rockford in the championship game entering the top of the seventh inning. As all true champions do, Cuervo Gold reach down inside themselves and found that something extra that makes a persona champion as they rallied to score six runs to take a 9-8 lead over Blackhawk Athletic Club. The ladies from Rockford have several championships under their belts also and they tied the score at nine runs each to force extra innings in this championship game. Cuervo Gold not to be denied as they opened the top of the eighth inning with a base hit before Terri Ingalls came to bat. Ingalls dug in at the plate and found her pitch driving it over the fence for a two run home run that proved to be the differences in this game as Cuervo Gold hung on to win 11-9. GOTRS (3-2) from Elgin finished in third place with High Voltage (2-2) from St Charles taking home fourth place from this nine team tournament.
Cuervo Gold was led play the overall play of the tournament's MVP Meghan Murray plus the play of Karen Kraus, Kelly Miller, Laurie Wilson, and Kelly Olmstead who were all names to the 2004 USSSA/Worth Sports Women's Class C All-Tournament Team.
The Deerfield ladies opened play win a lopsided 13-1 win over Rosati's Of Wheaton in the first round of tournament action. Leading the way for Cuervo Gold in this win were the bats of Sherri Balke 3-3, Meghan Murray 2-3 with a two run home run, Kelly Miller who hit a pinch hit three run home run, plus Laurie Terpinas, Laurie Wilson, Kelly Olmstead and Karen Kraus each collected two hits each in this win.
In their second contest on Saturday Cuervo Gold posted another one sided victory onto the bracket board as they toppled Blackhawk Athletic Club 11-1 to move into Sunday's winner's bracket finals. Leading the way with the bats for Cuervo Gold in this win were; Murray 2-3, HR with 3 RBI, Miller 2-2, with a HR, Ingalls with two hits and Jan Fitzgerald two hits for the victorious ladies from Deerfield.
On Sunday in the game between the last two unbeaten teams left in this tournament Cuervo Gold
and GOTRS locked up in a nail biter of a ball game with Cuervo Gold edging the ladies from
Elgin 4-3 to earn their spot in the tournament's upcoming championship game. In a game that
was dominated by both teams pitchers Cuervo Gold was led at the plate by the hitting of Ingalls
with 2 RBI, Miller with two hits and Wilson with two hits.
Now Cuervo had to sit and wait until after the loser's bracket was played out to its conclusion and
when it was a rematch with Blackhawk Athletic Club awaited the ladies from Deerfield in the title
game. Blackhawk seemed bent on taking a pound of flesh as revenge for their loss to Cuervo
Gold from Saturday but the late inning heroics by Cuervo Gold enabled them to come back from
the dead and retake the lead in the seventh inning before wining the game in the eighth inning
11-9 to win the title to the 22nd Annual USSSA/Worth Sports Women's Class C NIT. Cuervo Gold
was led at the plate during this win by the hitting of Miller who hit her third home run in four
games, Murray with two hits, Ingalls with two hits, Terpinas with three hits, and Olmstead who
had a pinch-hit two run double to give Cuervo Gold the lead in the top of the seventh inning.
Blackhawk Athletic Club made it to the championship game by opening play against Prime Time
from Charleston and they promptly posted an 10-2 win onto the bracket board to advance into the
second round of tournament play.
In the second round Blackhawk Athletic Club stumped their toe by losing to the eventual tournament champions Cuervo Gold 11-1sending the ladies from Rockford into the loser's bracket.
Blackhawk Athletic Club rebounded as a team and started a winning streak by eliminating
Souse's/Ispen International from Rockford 14-4 to complete their play on Saturday.
On Sunday morning Blackhawk Athletic Club managed to outscore High Voltage in a high scoring
game 21-17 to advance into the loser's bracket championship game. Blackhawk Athletic Club
eliminated GOTRS 14-9 to earn a second chance at beating Cuervo Gold in the finals.
But this was not to be as Blackhawk Athletic Club had built a 8-3 lead entering the top of the
seventh inning when all of a sudden Cuervo Gold came to life as they scored six runs and took
the lead over the Rockford ball club. Blackhawk Athletic Club managed to tie the game in the
bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings but a two run home run by Cuervo Gold in the
top of the eighth inning spelled defeat for Blackhawk Athletic Club as they were forced to settle
for second place from this tournament after dropping the championship game 11-9 in eight
innings.
Blackhawk Athletic Club did not provide Illinois Softball report with any information, team highlights, stats or quotes on how they were able to finish in second place from this tournament.
