2008 Illinois ASA Hall of Fame

ASA State Commissioner Don Brewer and
Illinois ASA Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Nicol announced that the
2008 Illinois ASA Hall of Fame induction banquet would take place
at the Decatur Hotel and Convention Center in Decatur on Saturday
March 15th.
The Illinois ASA Hall of Fame is the highest honor attainable in
the Illinois Amateur Softball Association, the governing body of
softball in the state of Illinois.
Six individuals and four teams will be honored at this year induction
banquet.
Davis Scott from Greenup will be inducted as a male fast-pitch
player. An outfielder that has played for eight teams during his
twenty-five year long career. To his record he has played on three
ASA Men's Class A State championship teams and also appeared in
fifteen ASA National Tournaments. A perennial .300 hitter from the
leadoff spot in the line-up and he stole two hundred sixty eight
bases during his career. He also managed for six seasons for both
Bonutti Orthopedic and Nokomis Budweiser posting a 277-91 record.
Richard Tillitt from Murphysboro a men's fast-pitch pitcher
who has more than 800 career wins in his thirty-six year softball-playing
career. His 1978 Arcola S & K ball club won the ASA Men's Class
A National Tournament. Nine times Tillitt was named to the first
team ASA Illinois All-State team and twice to the ASA first team
'All-American' team (1978 & 2004). Tillitt always helped himself
with the stick posting a .300 career batting average with more than
200 home runs to his credit.
Tony Romolo from Peoria is being inducted into the Meritorious
Service category. Romolo has been associated with ASA fast-pitch
softball for sixty years in the Peoria area. He has been a player,
a sponsor and an ASA Commissioner,
Fran Prochaska from Rock Island will be inducted as a coach
and sponsor. He has sponsored teams since 1984 and in his twenty-two
years of participation in the Illinois ASA his teams have finished
in fourth place at the state tournament eleven times, finishing
in third place twice, second place twice and his team s also has
won an Illinois ASA state title. His team also participated in the
senior division of softball where they have collect three more second
place finishes at the Illinois ASA State tournaments.
Barry Pepper from Wyoming will be inducted into the Illinois
ASA Hall of Fame as an umpire. In twenty years of service to the
Illinois ASA Pepper has worked fifteen state tournaments, five ASA
Regional tournaments and seven ASA National Tournaments.
Leo Sassatelli from Taylorville has sponsored softball teams
in Illinois for thirty-five years. His 'Sassatelli Blues' youth
team has won seven Illinois ASA state titles. They have also finished
with a second place and a third place at the ASA National Tournament.
His Sassatelli Junior Blues squad has also won two Illinois ASA
State titles. Sassatelli has also sponsored successful men's fast-pitch
teams for many seasons.
Four highly successful teams will be inducted into the team category
of the Illinois ASA Hall of Fame on March 15th in Decatur. They
are the Macomb Magic and women's fast-pitch ball club, Wood
River Phone Masters a men's slow-pitch ball club, Taylorville
Blues and Boy's team and Decatur Oxygen a men's slow-pitch
ball club.
